Step one: get the audio

Ringtones want a short clip, usually between 15 and 30 seconds, so plan to trim the file before setting it.

Setting it on Android

Move the MP3 into your Ringtones folder, then pick it under Settings → Sound → Phone ringtone. Most Android phones also let you set a per-contact tone from the contact card.

Any free audio editor will trim the clip first; several can write straight to the Ringtones folder for you.

Setting it on iPhone

iOS does not accept MP3 ringtones directly — it wants a .m4r file of 30 seconds or less, which is the step that trips most people up.

GarageBand on iOS does this without a computer: import the MP3, trim it, then share it as a ringtone. Alternatively, import into the Music app on a Mac, convert to AAC, rename the extension to .m4r, and sync it across.

Why will my iPhone not accept the MP3?

iOS only accepts ringtones as .m4r files of 30 seconds or less. Convert the MP3 with GarageBand on your phone, or through the Music app on a Mac.
